Some frequently asked questions about broken or cracked teeth:

What will Family Dental do to repair the broken tooth?

There are a variety of treatment options. It may be a minor crack that only requires us to smooth out the enamel, a medium sized crack may require a crown or cap, while a deeper crack that gets close to the nerve may require a root canal in order to save the tooth.

We have a variety of options, including a Cerec all-porcelain crown that can protect your tooth in 1 visit, a treatment which normally requires 2 visits.  Even if the tooth requires a root canal, the procedures — which many times require 4 visits elsewhere — we can complete in one visit.

Why?

  • Dr. Christian has completed advanced training to be able to provide root canal therapy and we have invested in special technology.
  • We can make crowns in one visit with our CAD-CAM and milling system called Cerec.
  • Our glazing porcelain oven even allows us to custom-match unique colors and characteristics of your smile. If required, we can even make a bridge (again, in one visit) to have a tooth where a cracked or unsaveable tooth used to be.
  • If you prefer a dental implant option, we place and restore dental implants right here in our office as well.
  • If missing teeth lead to you wanting a partial or complete denture, we can extract and replace teeth in one visit.

Can I treat a broken tooth on my own?

No, unfortunately. As mentioned, you may have a damaged nerve, and believe us, this pain is likely going to get worse.

What causes a broken tooth?

Teeth can break in a variety of different ways. Here are the common ones:

  • You bite down on something hard
  • You are hit in the mouth, or you fall down on your face or mouth
  • You have old cavities cause your tooth to weaken
  • You have old amalgam fillings that can no longer support the enamel of your tooth

Ouch:  Does a broken tooth hurt?

It may not. But you’ll feel it with your tongue, or if you eat hot or cold food or drinks.

Chewing is really the big source of pressure. You may feel it then.

Sometimes a broken tooth will not hurt even when it breaks (off), but it will hurt when the underlying jawbone gets infected if the tooth problem is not addressed.

What should I do before I go to the dentist?

Before you get to the dentist’s office, you may want to:

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water.
  • Use a piece of gauze and apply pressure to the any bleeding areas.
  • Apply a cold pack to your cheek over the broken tooth.
  • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever.

Remember, teeth are not like headaches—they are hard structures that need to be reinforced when broken.
